Professional Background
After qualifying to teach in 1967 Chris taught physics in Secondary and Further education.
He became education officer of the trade union APEX running training courses for shop stewards and workplace representatives, while studying part time for a degree in social sciences.
Chris then took a masters’ degree in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management and followed this up with a PhD in Industrial Relations (both at the London School of Economics.)
After this Chris went to work for ‘Clive Jenkins’ union’ ASTMS, which in due course became the union now known as Amicus. Chris rose to become National Officer responsible for the Non Profit Sector and the Working Environment and played an important part in a number of special projects.
After following a course in journalism at City University Chris started writing freelance for several papers including the Guardian and the Evening Standard.
On leaving Amicus, Chris confirmed his long experience in personnel and industrial relations issues by obtaining Chartered Membership of the CIPD. He is also a Visiting Fellow in Industrial Relations at the London School of Economics.
Chris has extensive experience of the non profit sector as well as other sectors of the economy.
