Professional Background

Awarded a Ford Bursary in 1969 to attend the prestigeous Relate 10 Day Summer School on Group Work and Counselling enabled him to develop his expertise in these areas. He moved into community development, and then into working with the Home Office’s Prison Department P2 and P4 Divisions in partnership with a major national voluntary agency.

At this time he became involved with an ex-prisoners housing association to help develop their facilities in skills training.

He continued to work in the field of community development and invited the Black American community leader, Ted Watkins of the Watts Community Organisation, Los Angeles to a project he was involved in south London.

He also became involved in running an independent living unit for physically disabled young adults which gave him opportunties to develop his ideas and practice on realistic expectations. Whistle-blowing following a near fatality and the subsequent media coverage and investigations, gave him the expertise to develop his Crisis Coaching approach.

Moving to further education where he delivered a multitude of community and adult re-skilling courses he devised approaches to ensure students devised ‘mission statements’ on life coaching lines. He also taught teachers to teach and became a staff mentor assisting colleagues develop their teaching and personal skills.
